Introduction: Working with enVision® Mathematics

Through a growth-mindset approach, enVision® helps students develop problem-solving skills through building a deeper conceptual understanding to approaching problems. Daily classroom lessons provide opportunities to build and strengthen their competencies with problem-based instruction, small-group interaction and visual learning.

Teachers build their daily math lessons based on the enVision platform and workbook, and the homework your student brings to tutoring sessions are from this workbook. The information provided here is intended to help tutors better understand the fundamentals students are being taught.

enVision resources for each grade include 16 math topics (for example, the first topic for third graders is Understanding multiplication and division of whole numbers). Each topic includes an overview plus six lessons to help students master that topic.

Fundamental practices of envision mathematics include:

  • Analyze a problem, make conjectures, ask relevant questions and persevere in solving.

  • Attempt to make sense of quantities and how they relate to each other.

  • Communicate ideas effectively, analyze others’ thinking and decide whether it makes sense.

  • Apply known math to help solve real-world problems.

  • Select and use appropriate tools to solve problems.

  • Use clear language and definitions to communicate mathematics precisely.

  • Look for patterns when solving problems.

  • Look for repeating calculations, general methods and shortcuts when solving problems.

suggestions to support your student’s use of envision:

  • Be open to learning alongside your student

  • Provide ongoing positive feedback when your student integrates fundamental practices (above) when solving problems

  • Acknowledge progress, even small achievements

  • Point out how math is used in everyday life
