Interested in Joining the Invest in Youth Board? Read on!
The success of Invest in Youth relies on the time, talent and expertise of our volunteer base; funds donated by individuals, corporate sponsors and foundations; and participation from our partner teachers and schools.
Leading these efforts is our board of directors, who serve one or two three-year terms and actively participate on working committees to ensure all components of Invest in Youth run smoothly. Committees typically meet outside of the board meetings to assign tasks and manage projects, and report back to the board.
We value all levels of skills, backgrounds and experience — and we are particularly drawn to individuals who reflect the communities we serve — those who can appreciate and connect with the cultural backgrounds and lived experiences of our students. Directors come from a variety of industries, including financial services, education, high-tech and consulting fields. While some have decades of experience at the highest level, others are just beginning their careers. What brings us together is the commitment to advance the academic abilities, self-confidence and life prospects our young learners.
As we focus on completing the 2024-2025 school year and prepare for the upcoming year we are particularly seeking individuals with the following backgrounds and skillsets:
Fundraising, including participating on event planning committees, grant researching and writing, targeting corporate sponsors, and managing outreach for individual giving.
Volunteer recruitment, specifically tutor recruitment for the 2025-2026 school year.
Organizational management, including volunteer management, nonprofit governance and project management.
Committees include:
Programming: Develop student materials to support partner teachers in the classroom, develop tutor training materials including recommending content on the tutor-resources webpage, develop and maintain relationships with school principals and administration.
Recruitment: Execute tactics to re-enroll previous year tutors, identify new community groups to target for tutor recruitment, conduct group and individual presentations to recruit new tutors, partner with marketing and communications for digital outreach.
Marketing and Communications: Direct digital media including website and social platforms, create promotional material for events, ensure consistent and professional presentation of all materials.
Individual Giving: Direct and manage year-end appeals, manage donor relationships, coordinate GiveBIG and other online campaigns.
Foundations Outreach: Research foundations to target, write grants, follow-up with.
Golf: Plan annual Invest in Youth Golf Classic including course selection and all event oversight (ticket sales, registration, games, rules, targeting sponsors).
Spring Fundraiser: Plan annual event including venue identification, ticket sales, auction planning, entertainment and catering
Finance: Manage budget development and oversight, oversee day-to-day accounting.
Governance: Develop policies, guidelines and internal control systems to ensure organization runs effectively and efficiently (bylaws, code of conduct, oversee financial reporting to board and lead board recruitment efforts).
In addition, the executive committee (board chair, vice-chair, secretary and treasurer) develops board meeting agendas, manages staff and, while separate from the governance committee, supports those efforts.
All board members are expected to attend, in-person, board meetings (six each year), participate on one or more committee, engage in fundraising efforts (attend events, support fundraising efforts through engaging one’s personal and professional networks, donate a meaningful amount to Invest in Youth) and observe at least two tutoring sessions if not a tutor. In addition, all directors, per Seattle Public Schools, are required to clear a background check to ensure the safety of our students.
Not ready to commit to serving at the board level? Let us know if you’re interested in serving on any of the committees! Plus, we’re always looking for individuals to host a house-party to introduce new individuals to Invest in Youth. Reach us through the contact link.
